This 3 day course is designed for the otolaryngologist and speech language pathologist to gain knowledge and skill in the performance and interpretation of laryngeal stroboscopy and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Principles of laryngeal and upper aerodigestive function will be discussed so that the clinician will understand the necessity and true diagnostic potential of laryngeal endostroboscopy and FEES. Several hours of hands-on laboratory sessions will develop skills in the clinical performance of each examination. Interpretation techniques for the beginner through advanced clinician will be presented through didactic lectures and applied during interactive case presentations. Finally, equipment and billing considerations required to build a voice and swallowing practice will be discussed.

At the completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Use videostroboscopy as part of clinical practice to identify changes in vocal fold vibratory parameters.
  2. Implement findings from videostroboscopy more clearly guide treatment choices.
  3. Complete flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) to identify swallowing deficits.
  4. Use FEES to determine bolus consistency appropriate for patients, identify compensatory strategies, and make treatment recommendations.
