Overview:

This program brings together members of the Abbott Orthopaedic Society and faculty and residents of the UCSF Department of Orthopaedics in a collaborative presentation of recent advances and updates in orthopaedic surgery. Our schedule of presentations will address current clinical and research topics that affect clinician decision-making in day-to-day practice.

Objectives:

The purpose of this course is to increase competence and improve clinical practice in the care of orthopaedic patients. We specifically anticipate improvements in skills and strategies to:

Improve the understanding of the pros and cons of adopting new technology in orthopedic surgery;
Understand how to conduct collaborative research studies in research poor settings;
Evaluate the use of non-pharmaceutical methods for treatment of pain after orthopedic surgery, and recognize risk factors associated with chronic opioid use in orthopaedic patients;
Consult with patients regarding the advantages and disadvantages of different surgical approaches in the surgical treatment of spinal conditions of the spine, and evaluate the influence of bone health on the risk of mechanical complications after lumbar spine fusion;
Describe the role of narrative medicine and artificial intelligence in Orthopaedic Surgery.

The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
